Explanation
A question can make someone answerable while quietly presenting a missed deadline, a duty to disclose or another disputed premise as settled. A counter-question suspends the expected reply and can ask how that premise was established. The recipient temporarily changes the distribution of questioning roles. This can enable an eventual answer, protect a boundary or evade responsibility. None of these functions follows from the second question mark alone. A clarifying return may be both counter-question and repair; a counter-accusation can leave the initial issue untouched. The subsequent exchange is needed to distinguish the paths.
Movement of thought
1. Record the initial question and its assumptions. 2. Identify the expected response position. 3. Specify what the return question examines. 4. Follow whether clarification, boundary or evasion results.
Scientific use case
Conversation analysis can trace question sequences and later answers. The analysis must not infer hostile motives from interrogative form alone.
Example
Invented exchange: “Why did you break our agreement?” — “Which agreement are you referring to?” This can establish an essential referent before any admission or denial, rather than presuming that every return question is obstruction.
Counterexample
“Did you check the source?” — “Have you never made a mistake?” A possible mistake by the first speaker does not answer the source question.
Distinction
Hypophora includes self-questioning and answering; a counter-question here responds to another speaker. Suggestiveness concerns construction, repair communicative trouble, and counter-accusation a different returned charge.
Effect on thought and perception
Readers can examine an imposed answer frame without assuming that refusing an immediate answer is always either virtuous or deceptive.
Resonance
An answer returns as a question and makes the prior frame audible; mutual understanding remains a possibility, not a guaranteed result.
Etymology
The transparent English compound names a response relation. “Counter” need not indicate hostility or disprove the legitimacy of the original question.
Provenance
The dossier compares Harjung’s historical labels with Bullinger and the broader Anthypophora tradition. Their uses are not collapsed into universal synonyms or newly dated first attestations.

Guiding question
Must this question be answered as framed, or does its framework first need examination?
Five coordinate questions
These descriptions explain the entry. They are not controlled register values and do not generate shared register results.
- Where can the process be observed?
Invented exchange: “Why did you break our agreement?” — “Which agreement are you referring to?” This can establish an essential referent before any admission or denial, rather than presuming that every return question is obstruction.
- What happens to the material?
Record the initial question and its assumptions.
Identify the expected response position.
Specify what the return question examines.
Follow whether clarification, boundary or evasion results.
- At what level does a change occur?
Readers can examine an imposed answer frame without assuming that refusing an immediate answer is always either virtuous or deceptive.
- What temporal structure is explicitly described?
The steps offer an order of analysis, not an asserted real-time sequence of mental events. Read the particular example sequence separately from the historical development.
- How can the description be tested?
“Did you check the source?” — “Have you never made a mistake?” A possible mistake by the first speaker does not answer the source question.
Historical context
The dossier compares Harjung’s historical labels with Bullinger and the broader Anthypophora tradition. Their uses are not collapsed into universal synonyms or newly dated first attestations.
Cross-language distinction and terminology
“Clarifying question” can name a purpose of the same move. Not every counter-question seeks clarification, and not every subsequent question responds to the original one.
Scholarly comparisons and distinctions
These entries are editorial comparison anchors for the distinctions made in this article. They are not new canonical relation edges or shared register results.
Proposed thought pathway
- Record the initial question and its assumptions.
- Identify the expected response position.
- Specify what the return question examines.
- Follow whether clarification, boundary or evasion results.
An editorial exploration, not a necessary sequence of thought or experimental evidence of an effect.
Source scope and provenance
Both specialist versions are editorially accepted. The recorded scope of the reference-work research is retained; this is not a fresh full verification of every primary source. Examples and analytical steps are Atlas applications.
