Person

Person can designate, in philosophical, social, theological or legal contexts, a bearer of self-relation, relationships, action, responsibility or claims to respect. The foundational criteria remain disputed. A human being is not identical with a discursive person-image, a single role or a present performance of self-expression.

Why is this entry in the Atlas?

G · Foundational concept R2 · Necessary foundation

The profile creates orientation among role, self-presentation and the larger concept of a bearer of claims. It guards against replacing philosophical personhood with successful communicative performance. Persona concerns a presented role or voice; identity questions continuity and belonging; responsibility concerns answerability. None alone supplies an exhaustive person concept.

Colours and admission grounds

The rectangular label identifies the entry function: F – linguistic figure or procedure; A – analytical concept; G – foundational concept; E – selected concrete case. The rounded badge indicates the admission ground: R1 – distinctive contribution; R2 – necessary foundation; R3 – justified illustrative case. This editorial rationale explains the current selection rather than claiming an undocumented original selection history.

Explanation

Labels compress encounters. “The difficult colleague” can collect disparate objections into an apparently stable character. Such a description may notice a real pattern but may also obscure what was said, under which conditions and with what reasons. Examining the selection is not the same as prohibiting criticism or accountability. The larger philosophical concept must remain visible. Being unable to speak, remember a particular episode or perform a preferred public identity does not make someone a mere object of others' interpretations. Nor can the Atlas resolve every debate about nonhuman or institutional personhood through an example about workplace labels.

Movement of thought

1. Name the sense of person being used. 2. Separate an individual from role and attributed image. 3. Recover the actual statements and circumstances. 4. Distinguish criticism of conduct from denial of consideration.

Scientific use case

A discourse study can examine how role labels shape whose contributions count and compare those labels with recorded opportunities to respond. Legal or metaphysical conclusions require their own explicit frameworks and evidence.

Example

Invented discussion: A patient unable to answer quickly is described as “not really participating.” A supporter asks which forms of response and time arrangements are available. The intervention challenges a narrow participation measure; it does not require assuming particular preferences or medical facts about the patient.

Counterexample

Person is not simply personality, consciousness, persona or human being in every context. Competing theoretical criteria should not be collapsed into a test that the reader can administer to decide someone's worth.

Distinction

Persona concerns a presented role or voice; identity questions continuity and belonging; responsibility concerns answerability. None alone supplies an exhaustive person concept.

Effect on thought and perception

The profile creates orientation among role, self-presentation and the larger concept of a bearer of claims. It guards against replacing philosophical personhood with successful communicative performance.

Resonance

Resonance may involve hearing a familiar label become inadequate to a person's actual contribution. It can also reveal the importance of attending to someone who cannot answer in the expected way.

Etymology

Latin persona lies behind the term. Familiar derivations involving masks and sounding through are historically influential but not treated here as secure etymological proof.

Provenance

The inherited HWdR dossier presents a particular rhetorical-anthropological reading amid wider philosophical and theological histories. A cited Kant passage must remain in its critical context rather than become a free-standing final definition.

Guiding question

What does this description reveal about someone, and what must it not be allowed to exhaust?

Five coordinate questions

These descriptions explain the entry. They are not controlled register values and do not generate shared register results.

Where can the process be observed?

Invented discussion: A patient unable to answer quickly is described as “not really participating.” A supporter asks which forms of response and time arrangements are available. The intervention challenges a narrow participation measure; it does not require assuming particular preferences or medical facts about the patient.

What happens to the material?

Name the sense of person being used.

Separate an individual from role and attributed image.

Recover the actual statements and circumstances.

Distinguish criticism of conduct from denial of consideration.

At what level does a change occur?

The profile creates orientation among role, self-presentation and the larger concept of a bearer of claims. It guards against replacing philosophical personhood with successful communicative performance.

What temporal structure is explicitly described?

The steps offer an order of analysis, not an asserted real-time sequence of mental events. Read the particular example sequence separately from the historical development.

How can the description be tested?

Person is not simply personality, consciousness, persona or human being in every context. Competing theoretical criteria should not be collapsed into a test that the reader can administer to decide someone's worth.

Historical context

The inherited HWdR dossier presents a particular rhetorical-anthropological reading amid wider philosophical and theological histories. A cited Kant passage must remain in its critical context rather than become a free-standing final definition.

Cross-language distinction and terminology

Person, persona, personality and self require separate English treatment. Legal person belongs to a specifically identified jurisdictional discussion; this profile is not current legal advice.

Scholarly comparisons and distinctions

These entries are editorial comparison anchors for the distinctions made in this article. They are not new canonical relation edges or shared register results.

Proposed thought pathway

  1. Name the sense of person being used.
  2. Separate an individual from role and attributed image.
  3. Recover the actual statements and circumstances.
  4. Distinguish criticism of conduct from denial of consideration.
