Explanation
A narrative level locates acts of narration in relation to the events they narrate. When a character within a narrative tells a story, an embedding occurs. The chosen framework determines how the levels are named. A conversation between characters, a flashback or a comment on storytelling does not automatically create the same kind of new level. Narrative embedding must also be distinguished from a shift between represented worlds or levels of reality. Analysis therefore states who narrates, what is embedded and which model of levels it uses.
Movement of thought
1. Identify the current narrating act. 2. Locate the events it narrates. 3. Look for an embedded narrating act. 4. Check embedding separately from changes of world. 5. Name the levels within the chosen framework.
Scientific use case
Text annotation can record the beginning, end, speaker and addressee of embedded narrating acts; alternative frameworks can be compared on the same passages.
Example
In the constructed frame narrative, Mira describes a visit. During the visit, Jan tells a story about his childhood. Jan’s story is embedded in Mira’s narrative.
Counterexample
If Mira moves from yesterday to today within the same narrating act, this does not by itself establish a new embedded narrative level.
Distinction
Distinguish chronology, focalisation, diegesis as a world and metanarration. Level labels depend on the framework; embedding is not already metalepsis.
Effect on thought and perception
A map of levels can show which representation contains another and where a transition needs explanation.
Resonance
A story opens another space of telling within itself.
