Explanation
The same name can function differently within an interpretive tradition. A city may remain a historical place while also being read as a community, a moral relation or a hoped-for heavenly destination. The transition is not merely the discovery of a second dictionary meaning: an inherited framework orders the kinds of meaning and their direction. Such a reading can connect present experience to hope without being a literal proposition of the text. The interpreter must therefore name the framework, distinguish its claims from demonstrable authorial intention and leave its religious assumptions visible. Explaining that structure neither endorses nor refutes the faith that sustains it.
Movement of thought
1. Establish the literal reference. 2. Identify the interpretive tradition and its assumptions. 3. Reconstruct the spiritual or final horizon being proposed. 4. Distinguish the interpretive result from the text's literal assertion. 5. Compare the different levels without collapsing them.
Scientific use case
Historical exegesis can trace the allocation of expressions to levels of scriptural sense. It studies the interpretive practice without treating its religious horizon as an empirically demonstrated future event.
Example
The tradition mediated by the HWdR can read Jerusalem as an earthly city and as a heavenly community. The Atlas asks which level is active and what licenses the transition. This is an explanation of an inherited example, not a newly verified quotation from an ancient text.
Counterexample
A personally inspiring reading is not automatically a historical anagogy. Neither hidden meaning nor hopeful language by itself establishes this particular interpretive procedure. The wider and logical historical uses of the term need separate treatment.
Distinction
Hermeneutics is broader. Allegory concerns a mode of representation as well as traditions of reading. Anagogy here specifies a religiously situated orientation; depth imagery alone does not establish it.
Effect on thought and perception
A familiar reference becomes a directional sign within a larger account of time and fulfilment.
Resonance
Hope can connect a present situation to something beyond it. Readers who do not share the framework can still understand its structure without being required to accept it.
Etymology
The inherited Greek designation carries an image of leading upward. That image is not an argument for the superiority of one interpretation.
Provenance
The dossier distinguishes the Christian hermeneutic tradition from logical uses of anagoge. No universal sequence of interpretive development or independently verified first occurrence is asserted.

Guiding question
What changes when words are read not only as recounting the past but as pointing towards an ultimate fulfilment?
Five coordinate questions
These descriptions explain the entry. They are not controlled register values and do not generate shared register results.
- Where can the process be observed?
The tradition mediated by the HWdR can read Jerusalem as an earthly city and as a heavenly community. The Atlas asks which level is active and what licenses the transition. This is an explanation of an inherited example, not a newly verified quotation from an ancient text.
- What happens to the material?
Establish the literal reference.
Identify the interpretive tradition and its assumptions.
Reconstruct the spiritual or final horizon being proposed.
Distinguish the interpretive result from the text's literal assertion.
Compare the different levels without collapsing them.
- At what level does a change occur?
A familiar reference becomes a directional sign within a larger account of time and fulfilment.
- What temporal structure is explicitly described?
The steps offer an order of analysis, not an asserted real-time sequence of mental events. Read the particular example sequence separately from the historical development.
- How can the description be tested?
A personally inspiring reading is not automatically a historical anagogy. Neither hidden meaning nor hopeful language by itself establishes this particular interpretive procedure. The wider and logical historical uses of the term need separate treatment.
Historical context
The dossier distinguishes the Christian hermeneutic tradition from logical uses of anagoge. No universal sequence of interpretive development or independently verified first occurrence is asserted.
Cross-language distinction and terminology
Anagogical interpretation identifies the chosen English focus. The logical use is not simply another English label for the same spiritual reading.
