Explanation
“We must cleanse the debate of emotion” does more than ask participants to give reasons. It imagines emotion as an unwanted substance and rational inquiry as a space to be purified. The counterquestion is which feelings distort judgement and which alert participants to an otherwise neglected wrong. The image should not settle that inquiry in advance. Mende's reference article traces context-dependent uses of purity and their normative force. Something is classified as out of place, and a corresponding demand to remove or separate it follows. The application to language provides a clear test, but must be labelled as an application. The consulted article explicitly omits a developed history of linguistic purity. An invented editorial demand can illustrate a mechanism; it cannot supply missing evidence for the history of a particular movement.
Movement of thought
1. A domain is represented as pure against an allegedly alien element. 2. Identify what counts as mixture or contamination in that representation. 3. Make explicit the actions it appears to authorise. 4. Replace the purification image with a descriptive account of the relevant difference. 5. Reassess the proposed action through criteria rather than inherited disgust or reassurance.
Scientific use case
A linguistic study could classify purity expressions, their targets and the measures advocated through them. Claims about historical language movements need further documents. The scenario above is not offered as such a document or as a finding about an actual editorial office.
Example
An invented editor wants to remove every foreign word from a public notice. Another editor asks which words readers cannot understand and which need explanation. Word origin is replaced by an assessable question about access. The example does not claim that every loanword is useful or that clarity never requires substitution.
Counterexample
A stipulated measurement of chemical purity is not automatically a moral metaphor. Keeping a sample free of a specified substance also supplies no warrant for applying an equivalent exclusion rule to people or cultural membership.
Distinction
Language ideology is broader than purity imagery. Boundary metaphors foreground separation; purity adds mixture and cleansing. Borrowing is not contamination by definition. The image-field does not replace the philosophical analysis of pure reason or other specialised concepts.
Effect on thought and perception
A seemingly descriptive image can make removal appear self-evidently desirable. Recognising that move allows readers to demand relevant criteria without rejecting every practical distinction or boundary.
Resonance
An unfamiliar element initially appears as disturbance. The reflective movement considers whether engagement changes understanding or whether a particular limit can be justified. Inclusion is no more automatic than exclusion.
Etymology
Purity metaphors is an English analytical heading. Its formation names a field for investigation; it does not demonstrate one invariant meaning of pure throughout history or supply an attestation date for the entire phrase.

Guiding question
What changes when a difference is described as contamination rather than simply as difference?
Five coordinate questions
These descriptions explain the entry. They are not yet controlled register values and generate no shared register results.
- Where can the process be observed?
- Transferred descriptions of purity and purification.
- What happens to the material?
- Make explicit the actions it appears to authorise.
- At what level does a change occur?
- Classification, evaluation and authorised action.
- What temporal structure is involved?
- A classified state may become the starting point of a demand for cleansing.
- How can the description be tested?
- Replace the purification image with a descriptive account of the relevant difference.
Historical context
The reference surveys selected religious and philosophical configurations while marking exclusions. That documented variation is incompatible with treating purity as one timeless doctrine. The contemporary language-policy application is expressly separated from that history.
Cross-language distinction and terminology
Purity, cleanliness and absence of admixture select different distinctions. The English account preserves those possibilities rather than importing every German rein expression into a single moralised category.
