Explanation
Epanalepsis causes an expression to reappear after an interruption. In its strictest form, the same words appear at the beginning and end of the same unit.
Example
We must wait, despite all our haste, wait.
Counterexample
Wait, wait, wait. – This is immediate repetition without an intervening pause.
Distinction
Epipher: Repetition at the end of several consecutive units.
Effect on thought and perception
Creates a sense of memory within the sentence and makes the recurring element appear altered by the intervening material.
Resonance
A word returns from its own echo.
