Topic shift

This explanation addresses the term in its originating context. It is not an additional canonical Atlas profile.

Explanation

A topic shift changes what a conversation or text is about. It may be agreed, gradually negotiated or abruptly imposed. The link from apoplanesis concerns evasive use; evasion is not inherent in every shift.

Movement of thought

1. Establish the current topic. 2. Locate any transition marker. 3. Name the new subject. 4. Examine acceptance or resistance. 5. Describe the shift's function with evidence.

Example

“That settles the date. Let us turn to the room layout.” The transition is explicit.

Counter-test

A new example addressing the same question need not change the topic.

Scientific use case

Conversation analysis can investigate topic development and rights to introduce subjects.

Effect

Attention is reorganised, potentially leaving questions unfinished.

Resonance

A conversation leaves one object behind and opens another.

Distinction

Distinguish speaker alternation, sentence boundaries and distraction; form and function require separate assessment.
